One Tichelaer, a barber, a man noted for infamy, accused Cornelius deWitt of endeavoring by bribes to engage him in the design of poisoningthe Prince of Orange. The accusation, though attended with the mostimprobable, and even absurd circumstances, was greedily received by thecredulous multitude; and Cornelius was cited before a court ofjudicature. The judges, either blinded by the same prejudices, or notdaring to oppose the popular torrent, condemned him to suffer thequestion. This man, who had bravely served his country in war, and whohad82been invested with the highest dignities, was delivered into thehands of the executioner, and torn in pieces by the most inhumantorments. Amidst the severe agonies which he endured, he still madeprotestations of his innocence, and frequently repeated an ode ofHorace, which contained sentiments suited to his deplorable condition:"Justum et tenacem propositi virum," etc.[16]
